About Anancus arvernensis

Anancus arvernensis was a large prehistoric proboscidean that lived across Europe during the Pliocene and into the Early Pleistocene. Although its overall appearance was elephant-like, Anancus belonged to an extinct group of proboscideans known as gomphotheres.

Its most striking feature was its pair of extremely long, relatively straight upper tusks. Unlike Konobelodon and other four-tusked proboscideans, Anancus had lost the elongated lower tusks of its ancestors, giving it a profile somewhat closer to later elephants.

Anancus was a large herbivore, standing roughly 3 metres at the shoulder, with teeth adapted primarily for browsing on leaves, shrubs, and other vegetation.

Together with animals such as Deinotherium, Anancus represents a time when the proboscidean family tree was far more diverse than it is today.
